TYPE; UNPAID (Possible qualification for 75 and 400 hour college internship credit.

DURATION; Expected start date week of beginning January 3rd until 25th June, onboarding between the 13-17th December

 

Overview:

Old Glory DC is inviting applications for the Intern Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach position for the 2022 Major League Rugby (MLR) Season.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated individual, looking to start or progress a career within Strength and Conditioning and High Performance Sport to further their understanding and application of the core skills required within a team sport environment.

The nature of the role involves a commitment to the rugby calendar involving early morning, evening, weekend and holidays.

 

Role Purpose;

Reporting to the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, the role holder will gain significant applied experience in assisting in the delivery of strength and conditioning, applied sport science, analytics and nutrition processes to the Old Glory DC Professional Team. 

The successful candidate will gain valuable experience operating within high performance environments, as part of this being responsible for their input in creating a positive environment for growth and maximizing outcomes.  Through this opportunity the role holder will gain greater level of understanding of holistic athlete preparation in areas including but not limited to;

 

  • Development of underpinning strength and conditioning skill and knowledge base
  • Experience operating within high performance sport
  • Experience actively coaching, implementing and leading sessions.
  • Learn how to operate, run and review feedback from applied Sport Science strategies
  • Assist with delivery of integrated return to play strategies in conjunction with the Physical Performance Team
  • Become familiar with performance monitoring methods and data visualization processes
  • Video Technology within Rugby Matches and Training Scenarios 
  • Developing and Analyzing Statistical Reports (Trend Analysis)

 

Key Challenges

  • Assist in creating and sustaining a learning environment enabling continual growth within both the Strength and Conditioning and wider rugby operations departments
  • Assist coaches in gaining insights through performance monitoring process to assess program effectiveness to inform program design and competition strategies.
  • Support quality data capture, analysis and reporting processes to enable longitudinal tracking of athlete progression against international benchmarks
  • Be able to effectively operate as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to athlete preparation through adapting ways of working including ‘cross-discipline’ communication and best practices.
  • Ability to operate as part of a collaborative High Performance team identifying challenges and actively creating solutions to performance problem encountered.

 

 

Responsibilities

The Intern Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach is primarily responsible for cooperatively implementing and delivering programs through coaching which effectively optimizes performance outcomes as part of the wider Old Glory DC objectives including but not limited to the following;

  • Implement warm ups and sessions as identified by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
  • Facilitate the set up and delivery of sessions
  • Assist with programming where appropriate/required
  • Assist Lead Analyst with implementation of video analysis set up and review of GPS and/or Video
  • Deliver on tasks as directed by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and Lead Analyst where required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or Biomechanics or working towards a graduate degree in a related field.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification
  • Legally entitled to reside in the USA for the duration of the internship period.

 

Desirable

  • Experience designing, delivering and modifying strength and conditioning programs
  • Exposure to and understanding of the application of applied technologies within strength and conditioning.
  • CSCS, UKSCA or ASCA accreditation
  • Prior experience within Team sports and/or Youth Development
