Old Glory DC is excited to announce the return of Gonzaga Rugby Alumnus Owen Sheehy for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. The utility back made his Major League rugby debut during the 2021 season on April 3rd when Old Glory DC faced the Toronto Arrows at Lupo Field in Marietta, GA. He went on to play two more matches with Old Glory DC during their 2021 campaign. During the off-season, Owen joined USA Rugby’s Selects Squad during the Americas Pacific Challenge 2021 in Estadio Charrua in Montevideo, Uruguay.
“I am very excited to be returning to Old Glory for another season,” said Owen. “Learning from our senior players last year was an incredible experience, and, in being so willing to give advice, they made the transition from college a lot smoother. I learned a lot this past year and even earned valuable playing time towards the end of the season. This year, I aim to build on those foundational skills from last season and help our team win games in whatever role I find myself in.”
“Owen is an exciting player who developed well last season,” said Head Coach Andrew Douglas. “He learned a lot and has returned this season a more mature player. He was part of the US Rugby U23 squad that toured South America and I believe he is capable if he continues his current development of stepping up to the full squad at some stage.”
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Owen Sheehy came to Old Glory in 2021 with two high school national championship titles under his belt with the Gonzaga varsity rugby team. This accomplishment led Sheehy to represent the High School All-Americans in 2017. He also played on teams that won 3 Penn Mutual Highschool 7s championships with the Maryland Exiles and DMV United 7s team.
The flyhalf joined the University of Wisconsin’s rugby club and was named the Top National D1A Freshman Player of the Week his first semester. Sheehy continued to excel within the collegiate rugby world, being named to the U19 US National Team in 2018 and honored as a Collegiate All-American in 2019.
