Hailing from Advance, North Carolina, Lum was introduced to rugby at a young age playing for the Triad Bulldogs of the Carolina Youth Rugby League.  Continuing his rugby career in college, Lum played D1A College Rugby at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia. During his collegiate career, the forward was named a Junior All-American in 2012.  Additionally, he was selected by Rugby Today, then Rugby Magazine, for the All-Freshman Honors List.

After graduating in 2013, Lum moved to Christchurch, New Zealand and played with Southbridge Rugby Club. The prop boasts four years of New Zealand Division I Club experience, playing for Canterbury Colts, Ellsmere Seniors, and Canterbury Country Seniors. A standout, Lum received the Colts Forwards Player of the Year award in 2014 and Canterbury Country Player of the Year award in 2017.

After his stint in New Zealand, Lum headed to Colorado to join Major League Rugby’s Colorado Raptors in their 2018 Fall Exhibition Season.

On joining the DC club, Lum said “I’m looking forward to the opportunity of being with Old Glory for its inaugural season and excited to join the team with all the positive energy of the players, fans, and coaching staff. “ In true forward fashion, the prop has eyes on the ultimate prize, the shield. “I want what all players and teams want—to hold the shield at the end of the year. We are a young team with a lot to prove, and I want to be a part of that.”

Fans will be able to see Maxwell Lum take the field during the 2020 home opener on February 16th. Season ticket sales are now out! Make sure you get the best spot in the stands this season. Secure your season tickets here.
