FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Washington, DC (September 4th, 2020) – Old Glory DC continues to strengthen its Scottish ties this season, signing a contract with longtime Scottish Premiership player, Steven Longwell.

The tighthead prop comes to Washington after spending a season with Verona Rugby in Serie A, a second-tier rugby union XVs competition in Italy.  Longwell decided to rise to professional rugby after being invited to train on the Glasgow Warriors training squad in early 2019.  One of few Scottish club players to go abroad, Longwell signed for Verona when they played in Top 12, the highest level of competition in Italy, but the team was relegated to Serie A soon after the ink dried.  As of May 2020, Verona rugby sits at the top of league standings in Serie A.

Before taking his career overseas to Italy, Longwell spent four years with Ayr RFC and their premiership side, the current league champions and British & Irish Cup holders – an admirable double feat in Scottish premiership rugby.

“Steven is an experienced tighthead prop who will add a lot of power to our team,” said Coach Douglas. “He is renowned in Scotland as a strong scrummager and damaging ball carrier.  Those qualities will be important to us.  Obviously, our set-piece needed to improve, and I believe Steve will be able to steady us in that area.  He is excited to come to DC, and we’re looking forward to seeing him in OG colors.

“Super excited [to be joining Old Glory],” said Longwell. “I am really looking forward to getting out and getting stuck in. In a league that’s growing every season, it will be great to be part of the journey with DC and push for the play-offs.”

Welcome, Steven Longwell!
