Old Glory DC dropped their final game before postseason play, as they were defeated 50-5 by San Diego Legion on Saturday night. The defeat kept OGDC in third place in the Eastern Conference, four points ahead of Miami, who was defeated in their final game of the regular season Sunday vs. Seattle.
After both teams struggled to connect passes in the early stages of play, Legion struck first in the 16th minute. A lineout led to a maul from which Brad Wilkin broke out, and the captain dotted down the ball for the first of his match-high 15 points. Steffan Crimp added the extras to give Legion the early lead.
Four minutes later, San Diego capitalized on a yellow card to Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz, scoring a penalty try only moments after the OGDC back saw yellow. The disciplinary issues continued for Old Glory, as KoiKoi Nelligan also received a yellow card immediately after the try. Despite being reduced to 13 men, Old Glory worked the ball deep into San Diego territory, before a turnover just before the cards expired allowed Legion to exploit the extra open space for another try. A long kick upfield led to Rhian Stowers having room to operate on the right side, and one of San Diego’s newest signings made it 19-0. Crimp made it 21-0 with ease.
Just before halftime, the referee continued to go to his pocket, this time for San Diego. A TMO check spotted foul play from Zak Farrance, and the referee showed him a red card. Old Glory could not capitalize on the numerical advantage after the halftime break. Just two minutes after play restarted, Crimp extended his arm across the try line for five of his 12 points in the match. Ethan Grayson added the conversion to grow the lead to 28. Crimp would tack on a penalty goal before Old Glory managed to get themselves on the board. A dazzling series of quick offloads worked the ball to the corner, where Owen Sheehy was waiting to put the ball down for an OGDC try. John Powers left the conversion short.
A 69th minute penalty try extended the San Diego lead, and Wilkin added two more tries in the final seven minutes of the match to grow the Legion margin of victory. Wilkin’s 11 tries rank him in the top five in Major League Rugby.
The win marked the most points that Legion had scored since a Week 2 victory over Anthem, while the Old Glory defeat saw the third time in 2025 that OGDC conceded 50 points or more. Despite the loss, Old Glory won the possession battle, and will look to right the ship next week in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. OGDC will travel to Chicago next weekend to begin their charge towards the 2025 Major League Rugby Championship in Rhode Island.
