Richard Merryman

Richard “Gunny” Merryman is the General Manager of Rugby Operations for Old Glory DC. Born in Washington, D.C., Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on January 17, 2006. He served in multiple deployments, including to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Over the course of his military career, Richard earned recognition for his leadership and discipline, notably as a 1812 Tank Crewman, Black Belt Martial Arts Instructor, and Drill Instructor. One of his most significant roles was as an assistant coach for the All Marine Rugby Team, a position that allowed him to combine his passion for rugby with his military background. Richard also served as an Assistant Marine Officer Instructor (AMOI) at the United States Naval Academy, where he contributed to the Navy Rugby Team’s success as part of the coaching staff. His rugby career includes playing for the West End Rugby Club and working with teams at various levels, demonstrating his deep commitment to growing the sport.

Outside of rugby, Richard is loves motorcyces and surfing when he can. He enjoys spending quality time with his family and has developed a reputation for keeping things lively. Richard’s diverse experiences, both on and off the field, make him a uniquely influential figure in the rugby community.
