FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — (Washington, DC – April 11, 2019) – Old Glory DC is proud to announce the signing of backrow player Michael Fletcher. As a naval veteran and long-time member of the D.C. club rugby community, Fletcher is a leader on and off the pitch.
Michael grew up in Wilmington, Delaware in a family of 9 siblings and graduated from John Dickerson High School. He began playing rugby in 2005 with West Potomac RFC, and today he plays for the Washington Irish RFC as well as the All Navy 7s team, where he has been selected to the All-Service team on multiple occasions.
A Navy Seabee and construction electrician in the DC area, Michael has served our country for 12 years, including deployments in Guam, Lithuania, Spain, Andros Bahamas, and Iraq. Michael is also a coach for Rouge Samurai RFC, and he attends and coaches at youth rugby clinics throughout the DC area.
“Nothing feels better than signing a guy I’ve known on the pitch myself – as a teammate, a fellow club member, and even sometimes as an opponent. I have the full confidence that he’s got the talent, the skills, and the character to deliver,” said Old Glory chairman Chris Dunlavey. “I expect to see Mike emerge as a leader as we pull together this team from so many different clubs and states.” Michael will be joining the backrow as a flanker and Number 8 for Old Glory.
