Old Glory DC is excited to announce the signing of Junior Sa’u to the squad. The Super League stand-out is the first new signing by DC for the 2022 Major League Rugby season.  Though best known for his exploits in the “other” rugby code, Sa’u is expected to add a strong presence to Old Glory’s backline.

“It’s exciting to have a player with Junior’s resume at Old Glory,” said Head Coach Andrew Douglas. “He’s a powerful, dynamic runner and a fearsome defender. His experience at his levels in League will bring confidence to other players. He’s an exciting signing not just for Old Glory but for Major League Rugby as well.”

Sa’u’s performance on the field led him to earn a slot on the New Zealand Kiwis squad in the 2009 Rugby League Four Nations tournament, where he made his international debut against Tonga. In 2010, Sa’u was selected to play for New Zealand in the ANZAC Test, a League match between Australia and New Zealand. Sa’u was again selected to the New Zealand squad for the 2010 Four Nations.

In 2013, Sa’u was selected to play for Samoa in the Pacific Rugby League International Test against Tonga. In the same year, Sa’u was called up to play in the Rugby League World Cup for Samoa. Since then, Sa’u has spent time with the Newcastle Knights, Melbourne Storm, and five years with the Salford Red Devils, where he went on to score 12 tries in his debut season and was voted ‘Supporters Player of the Year’ in 2014. Most recently, Sa’u joined the Leigh Centurions in 2019.

“I am grateful to be joining Old Glory for the up and coming 2022 MLR season,” said Junior Sa’u on signing with Old Glory for 2022. “I’m looking forward to meeting you all, but most importantly, ripping in and having a successful season. See you guys all soon.”
